Sworn translation

Sworn translation in Luxembourg: what you need to know

In Luxembourg, an official translation is made by a translator on the list of sworn translators and interpreters kept by the Ministry of Justice, set up by the law of 4 December 1990. The list is public and free to consult. For most procedures, a translation into French or German is requested.

Legalisation and apostille

A Luxembourg public document intended for use abroad may need to be legalised or apostilled. The legalisation service of the Directorate of Consular Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, processes the request in 3 working days, for €20 per document, at the counter or online through MyGuichet.lu. The signature of a sworn translator practising in Luxembourg can also be legalised.

Documents from the European Union

Between Member States, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 exempts many public documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, from legalisation and apostille. A document from a country outside the EU, on the other hand, often has to be apostilled in its country of origin before it is translated.

What we do for you

We check which form of translation the receiving body expects (administration, court, notary, university, employer), assign the document to a sworn translator in the right language pair and tell you whether a legalisation or an apostille is needed. You receive the translation by email and, when the paper original is required, by post. See the details on our sworn translation in Luxembourg page.
